“Global smartphone shipments grew 44 percent annually to reach a record 117 million units in Q3 2011. Samsung shipped 28 million smartphones and overtook Apple to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume with 24 percent market share. Nokia Gulp: The World's Largest Stop-Motion Animation Set using Nokia N8

I’m happy with my Nokia N8. For photo and video features, I don’t use many advanced techniques. And, I have some videos published at Dadio.TV using Nokia N8, so far I’m happy with the result. You can see more than 700 photos I took using Nokia N8 at Flickr.
If you want to see an example of creative and advanced technique using Nokia N8, you should see Gulp. It’s the world’s largest stop-motion animation shot on a Nokia N8. Here’s the final video:

So, what is Gulp?

‘Gulp’ is a short film created by Sumo Science at Aardman, depicting a fisherman going about his daily catch. Shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales, every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the ‘largest stop-motion animation set’, with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

There are some details on the production process at Nseries blog. These photos (and beind the scene videos) from the production must be watched.

Nokia Funaholic Icon Search

Following Nokia Indonesia’s Eksismeter campaign, there is now Nokia Funaholic Icon Search. This is all about finding an icon for Nokia E5. This Funaholic Icon Search will find three real person that represents three characters: Antonio (the super exist), Daisy (the music lover) and Kareem (the super busy guy). The mechanism is similar with the previous campaign: it’s all about being online presence, and everyone can join.

Right now, there are nine icon candidates. Visitors (you!) can vote your favorite candidates and you can get a chance to win one of these gifts from Nokia Indonesia: Nokia C3, Nokia X5 and Nokia E5!

How those characters — if you’re also one of them — take advantages from Nokia E5 device? Let’s look at some cool features for them.
For those who want to get online everytime (connected to many social network services, chats, and also email), Nokia E5 offers features that work for this purposes:

  • Messaging — Email is one of the important thing that people should have. Fromt this device, you can acess up to 10 personal email accounts. Does it only support Ovi Mail? No. You can check your  Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. I have tried this, and I find it useful. I use the messaging office to check my office email, Yahoo! Mail, Google Apps for domain email, and also Gmail. Until today, I find nothing but good features. Ovi Mail offers 1 GB of storage, and I think it also offers a short and cool domain name.
  • I want to chat also to make real time conversation with my friends. Using Nokia Messaging IM application, I can directly connect to some service like Yahoo! Messenger, and also Google Talk. And, to make the whole communication experience better, Nokia E5 also equipped with full QWERTY keyboard.
  • Nokia E5 also supports 3G and Wi-Fi connection. Free Wi-Fi can be found easily here in Indonesia when going to the mall, coffee shop, and some other public places. Great deal!
  • The home screen can be very useful because you can make access to your favorite menus. Also, you can also customize the home screen to create the a personal look that really “you”.
  • Camera — The camera features are not disappointing I guess. You have 5 MP camera, digital zoom up to 3x and also LED flash. It should be suitable for on-the-go photography. Does it also support video recording? Yes, with .mp4 or .3gp file formats.

All Nokia E5 features can be found at Nokia E5 product info page.
Back to Nokia Funaholic Icon Search I mentioned above, you can get a chance to get this Nokia E5 only by giving your vote. Now, you can start voting and may the best win :D

How to Merge Two Blogs Using WordPress 3.0 Multi-Site Feature

Now, WordPress installation in this domain (orangescale.com) powers my other blog — in Bahasa Indonesia, using WordPress 3.0 Multi-Site feature. I decided to use this method so that I don’t have to manage two separated WordPress installation. In short: orangescale.com and thomas.or.id are now using a single WordPress installation, using orangescale.com as the primary blog.
This method works on my blog, but I don’t guarantee that you will have the exact process depending your own installation:

  • First, enable WordPress 3.0 Multi-Site feature
  • You should have access to modify domain DNS record. If your webhosting provider provide “Add-on domain” feature, it should work.
  • Create a new site under First Blog, you can use any address first.
  • Export contents from blog you want to move using WordPress export feature.
  • Import the export file you have to Second Blog.
  • Copy all media files from Second Blog to firstblog.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/files/X/ (Note: “X” is the Site ID).
  • Check all settings, escpecially the image locations in your posts. Later, the uploaded media files will use this path: seconddomain.com/files/path/to/image.jpg (the path might be different). If you have broken image path, check the settings and paths again.
  • Install WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin. Follow the instruction. It’s easy.
  • Modify Second Blog DNS settings. Basically, you need to create an A record. Point your Second Blog domain to an IP address used by First Blog.
  • Check all plugins, blog settings, and permalink.
  • Enjoy!

I don’t know whether it’s an easy process or not, but here I want to show you that WordPress 3.0 Multi-Site feature can be useful. If you’re still comfortable to manage multiple blog installations, you don’t need to use this method.
It’s not a problem-free solution, of course. And it might be tricky sometimes. For example, about the plugin activation. Which plugins should be installed ‘globally’ or ‘locally’. Some plugins might work without any modifications. Here, I still have a plugin that does not work on my Second Blog. It works well on my primary blog, but not on the secondary. So far, I’m happy with the result.

Using CloudBerry Explorer to Manage Amazon S3 Account

In my previous post, I mentioned an Amazon S3 tool called CloudBerry S3 Explorer. I also have S3Fox organizer addon installed. I use them both, and I feel that I’m more comfortable with CloudBerry Explorer.

CloudBerry Explorer makes managing files in Amazon S3 storage EASY. By providing a user interface to Amazon S3 accounts, files, and buckets, CloudBerry lets you manage your files on cloud just as you would on your own local computer. (source)

Now, I want to share how I use CloudBerry S3 Explorer to manage my Amazon S3 Account.
CloudBerry Explorer is availble as a freeware software. We can download it for free. It offers many features we need to manage Amazon S3 account, from a simple to complicated tasks. After I downloaded and installed it, I can start using it. First, I need to add my Amazon S3 account into the application. Go to File > Amazon S3 Accounts.

Google Chrome's Incognito Mode

chrome incognito

Google Chrome offers another type of window/browsing mode called “incognito mode”. When we’re using Google Chrome in incognito mode page information (website addresses, downloaded files will not be stored/logged in our browsing and download histories. And, when we close the “incognito window”, all new cookies will be deleted right away.

Read mode details about incognito mode at Google Chrome Help page.

In simple definition, it means we can use incognito for more private browsing. It’s about information on your side, not server’s. If the server logs your data (IP address, user agents, etc), your data will be recorded.

But, I don’t regularly — well, almost never — use it. My main reason is because I’m using Google Chrome — and other browsers — in a private computer. And, sometime browsing histories are useful. The download histories, too.

Vimeo Plus is Available for International Users

vimeo_plus
Vimeo, my favorite video sharing provider, offers its Vimeo Plus for international users. Right now, Vimeo offers two types of account: free and Plus. I’m using the free account, and it’s more than enough for me.
With Vimeo Plus, we can get these features:

  • 5GB of upload space per week
  • 5000 free HD embed plays with purchase
  • The ability to control which domains can embed in HD
  • 25fps/PAL support for HD (up from 24fps)
  • Make your videos private on Vimeo.com while still able to embed them on your site
  • One-button upgrading of your existing videos to the latest high-quality format without using additional upload space
  • No banner ads
  • Unlimited Groups/Channels/Albums
  • Priority uploading.
  • Full control player customization

All for $59.95/year. For free accounts, I got these features:

  • 500MB of storage per week
  • Standard quality Video
  • 1 HD video per week
  • Basic player customization
  • 1 group, 1 channel and 3 albums

This is very a great offer for those who have many videos in HD quality. All my videos are still in standard quality. Well, only capture video using my mobile phone and digital camera. :)
But, when I have my own video recorder that support HD videos, I might upgrade my account. Anyway, among the video sharing providers, I like Vimeo. I tried to upload a same video to different providers like YouTube, blip.tv and Vimeo. And it seems Vimeo is the best solution for me, right now.

Trojan for Firefox: Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A

Here are a news about trojan from Greasemonkey — a Firefox addon. It is identified by BitDefender.

BitDefender has identified this new bit of holiday cheer as Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A” (the ChromeInject suffix refers to the Chrome component of Firefox). The trojan installs itself into Firefox’s add-on directory, registers itself as Greasemonkey, and begins searching your hard drive for passwords, login details, your World of WarCraft account information, and your library card number.
Please note, this trojan is not actually the Greasemonkey add-on, and only identifies itself as such. Mozilla has confirmed that the official Greasemonkey release contained within Mozilla’s own extension repository (and available here) is malware-free. If you’re currently using Greasemonkey or are interested in doing so, there’s no reason to avoid the legitimate add-on at this time, so long as you download it from Mozilla’s page or an equally trusted source.
Source

What does this trojan do?

Once installed, the trojan is capable of identifying over 100 web sites. When an infected user visits a site the trojan recognizes, the parasite comes to life and records the login/password details being transmitted. Presumably it then goes back to sleep, quietly keeping an eye on further system activity.

Welcome back Avianto!

Today, I would like to greet Boy Avianto. He continues blogging again by breaking his “two years without new posts” record. Personally, I like his posts, especially when he writes about technology, design and web standards.
Again, welcome back Avianto. And I promise that I will stop asking you this: kapan blognya aktif lagi?
