Penjaga: “Itu masih mahal, Mas…”

Yahoo! Flickr's new landing page

When did the last time you visit homepage? If you visit flickr.com, it has a new look and I think it displays more information. The new landing page will be visible only for non-logged in users.

Compared to the previous one, here are few things I noticed:

  • You will see bigger rotating photos and not only one. Notice the sliding effect there. Some members give their opinion about how photos are displayed. Read the feedbacks at Yahoo! Flickr blog.
  • Since this is made especially for new users, the new landing page gives more details on the top . By this, I think users will not need to go to the Tour page to get some reasons to create an .
  • . Previously, the page gave some numbers like how many photos uploaded in the last one minute, how many photos tagged with a certain tag, and also how many geo-tagged photos uploaded in a certain period — within a month? I’m not sure. All these numbers are gone now. I’m not sure whether the information displayed previously was real-time statistics or not.

The current does not seem trying to sell its Flickr Pro features. But of course, the Flickr Pro feature is something that probably-purchased by existing users. So, get more users first, and when they found the great and useful, they might want to their accounts.
And, there are 8 links to the account creation page. I counted and found 8 links. Or, more? Let me add one here: Create a Flickr account now. :D
Congrats Yahoo! Flickr for the new design. I rarely visit the frontpage, anyway.

Display more than 30 sets per page on Flickr

If you actively upload your to Flickr, you probably find that having lots of sets is a good idea. How many sets you have on your photostream right now? I have more than 200 sets. By default, if you browse sets in a photostream profile, you will only have 30 sets per page.

Flickr does not offer an option to have more than 30 sets per page when displaying sets. Yes, there is a paging navigation. But, is it possible to have more than 30 sets per page? Let’s say 100 sets per page? It’s possible.
What you need to do is adding a string in the . For example: My Flickr photo sets URL is http://flickr.com/photos/orangescale/sets/. It will give me a list of 30 sets per page. Now, put ?per_page=60 (you can modify the number if you want). So, it becomes like this: http://flickr.com/photos/orangescale/sets/?per_page=60. Now, there are 60 sets in a single page.

Moving a WordPress-powered site to another domain: The Permalink

Yesterday, I needed to move a self-hosted to another . The process was easy because it’s like copying all files, edit the and editing internal links in all posts. All process only took than 15 minutes. But, that’s not the only thing. One of the important things needed is to maintain the article links — known as “permanent link”.
This is important because I don’t want to send the visitors coming from other sources (links in blog posts, shared link on or ) to missing pages. It’s called “permanent link”, right? So, having the permanent link broken is not a good idea.
I came up with a simple solution: using .htacess. After moving all files and checking all configurations I put these lines in the .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*olddomain.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

So, when visitors visit olddomain.com/path/to/article/, the browsers will go automatically to newdomain.com/path/to/article/. Easy!

Ke Yahoo! Community Town Hall

Saya sendiri berbagi melalui presentasi singkat tentang Yahoo! Flickr.

Terus terang saja, sempat grogi.

I was going to Yahoo! Community Town Hall

… and I was on the stage a little bit about .
Last week, I got an opportunity to join Yahoo! Community Town Hall event at @atamerica, Pacific Place, Jakarta. I had visited the venue for few times, but this time, I went there from — I live in Jogjakarta (again) now, anyway.
A week before the , I got an invite to be one of the speakers. The topic? Yahoo! Flickr. I was a little bit clueless about what I was going to present in my presentation slides. I was told that I only had around 10 minutes.

Dear Flickr, I just want to buy a Flickr gift

But, it seems that something is broken.
Today, a friend contacted me to help him getting a Flickr Pro by activating a Flickr gift. This is not the first time for me purchasing gifts. Everything worked. Just worked. But, not today.

So, I wanted to buy my 11th Flickr gift — yes, 11th!. I went into what Flickr called “Place your order” page. I hit that blue “OK, I’M READY TO PAY” button. After that I was redirected to another login form for another authentication process. Sure, part of the checking processes, right? I gave my and nothing happened. Okey, may be it’s my web — even I was sure that nothing was wrong with my browser. The other browsers gave me the same results. It didn’t work. Okey, I waited.
Then, I tried again. But, I got a another respond. It was a message like this:

Sorry, Unable to process request at this time — 999.

  • This problem may be due to unusual network activity coming from your Provider. We recommend that you report this problem to them.

Okey. I’ll wait. Yes, it’s weekend, and it was midnight. Dear Yahoo! — or Flickr — could you please fix that? My friend just want to have his Flickr upgraded. Thank you.
[Added later]: This issue had been solved. It seemed that there was something wrong with the gateway issue. My friend bought a Flickr Pro gift for himself. :)
